How to Play 1v1 Duels in Justice Joust
A complete guide to our multiplayer feature. Learn how to challenge friends, earn JustCoins, and improve your ELO ranking through friendly competition.
One of the features we are most excited to share is 1v1 Duels. Studying with a friend has always been a great way to learn, so we built a system that lets you challenge other students directly on the platform. Here is a detailed explanation of how it all works.
Starting a Duel
To begin, navigate to the Arena section of the app. From there, you can choose to practice against a bot for free, or you can enter a Ranked Match using your JustCoins (our in-app currency).
When you enter a Ranked Match, the system will pair you with another student—from NLS or an Undergraduate program depending on your track—who has a similar skill level. Once a match is found, you will both be presented with the same set of questions in real-time.
How Scoring Works
In a duel, your score is determined by two factors: accuracy and speed.
- You must select the correct answer to get any points. Incorrect answers give you zero points.
- If you choose the correct answer, you receive a base amount of points.
- You also receive a speed bonus. The faster you lock in the correct answer, the more bonus points you earn.
Understanding ELO vs XP vs JustCoins
We track a few major metrics on the platform: XP, ELO, and JustCoins. It is important to know the difference to fully enjoy the game.
- XP (Experience Points): XP measures your overall effort and time spent learning. You gain XP by answering questions, completing quizzes, and finishing duels. Your XP only ever goes up. It is a badge of honor showing how hard you have been studying.
- ELO Rating: ELO (named after its creator Arpad Elo) is a chess-like rating system that measures your true skill level compared to others. When you register, you start with a base ELO score. If you win a Ranked Duel, your ELO increases. If you beat a highly-ranked opponent, your ELO increases a lot! However, if you lose a Ranked Duel, your ELO decreases. Over time, your ELO will accurately reflect your proficiency and dictate your rank—from Novice to Supreme Court Justice!
What are JustCoins?
Unlike XP and ELO, JustCoins are your spendable in-game currency. They form the core economy of the Justice Joust platform. Here are the main ways you can use them:
- Wagering on Duels: To enter a Ranked 1v1 Duel against a real person, you must wager a set amount of JustCoins. If you win the duel, you take your opponent's coins!
- Buying Power-Ups: You can visit the Store to buy powerful items like Hint Tokens, Time Extenders, and Streak Freezes. These items give you a strategic advantage when studying or dueling.
- Purchasing Exclusive Content: Save up your JustCoins to buy exclusive profile avatars, custom frames, and other cosmetics to show off your personality on the leaderboards.
You can earn JustCoins for free by logging in daily, maintaining your study streak, and winning duels. Need a quick boost before a big exam? You can always visit the Store and Pricing page to stock up on JustCoin packs directly!
Reviewing Your Matches
We highly encourage you to click the Review Answers button at the end of every match. This screen allows you to see the questions again, check what your opponent answered, and most importantly, read the detailed legal explanations for the correct answers. This is where the real learning happens.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do 1v1 Duels work in Justice Joust?
- You wager JustCoins and get matched with another student of similar skill. You both answer the exact same law questions simultaneously. The player with the highest accuracy and speed wins the duel and takes the coins.
- What is the difference between ELO, XP, and JustCoins?
- XP (Experience Points) measures total study time and never decreases. ELO measures your true skill and goes up or down based on your win record. JustCoins are the spendable currency you wager in duels and use to buy power-ups.
- Can I practice before putting my JustCoins on the line?
- Yes! You can choose to practice against an AI bot for free in the Arena before challenging real players in Ranked matches.
- Do you get points for guessing quickly?
- No. You only receive speed bonus points if you select the correct answer. Incorrect answers always yield zero points, regardless of how fast you click.
- What do I do with JustCoins?
- You can use JustCoins to wager on matchmaking duels, buy helpful power-ups from the Store like Hint Tokens and Streak Freezes, or purchase exclusive avatars for your profile.
